Elvis and Chuck Berry, drive-in movies and diners … America in the 1950s was replete with rock ’n’ roll, strawberry milkshakes and poodle skirts. The economy was flourishing in the postwar era, and this boost, along with the surge of American suburbanization and the newly built Interstate Highway System, granted the freedom to drive like never before (not to mention the influx of teenagers cruising the streets, too – cue ’50s icon James Dean).
Elongated with sleek tail fins and adorned with glistening chrome, ’50s cars were rocket-like and represented the Space Age phenomenon of the time. Chrome was frequently featured inside the cabin as well, enhancing window knobs, door handles and dashboards. Ornate hood ornaments, wraparound windshields and elaborate taillights were common finishing touches, complemented by eye-catching exterior colors such as Candy Apple Red, Pastel Pink and Seafoam Green.
